Oh man, this takes me back. I remember when my dad brought this album home.

And suddenly I’m back in high school, where my friends were mysteriously fond of this shitty song.
Why, Rover, why?

What makes this a shitty song? Of all the things from high school in 1998 (yes, me too), this is pretty damn good. Compared to shit like Sugar Ray, this is transcendent. He’s a hell of a guitarist in any case, puts on a good live show.

...because I’m also mysteriously fond of it? There’s something I really, really like about the riff, the instrumentation is in the best tradition of both bluegrass Nashville + Jacksonville rock and of older folk descent like
Ten Years After
, and while it does have opaque and incoherent lyrics, they
sound cool
in the right frame of mind, and aren’t all in a warbly alt whinge-muffin style. It’s got elements of an ordinary journeyman generic song, but some elements that are quite strong.

It’s a fuckin’ excellent song in the trappings of a mediocre one. The first time I heard it I was like “oh, more quasi-Southern Rock meandering... wait, what is this?. Ok, continue” Then I immediately tried to figure out who performed it because I wanted to hear it again a bunch of times.

Bite your tongue! KWS is a wonderfully talented blues guitarist.

Another young blues talent from that era.

This. I wasn’t sold on Kenny at first, but I really like this song. I think it’s a great riff, particularly on bass. I’ve now seen him live a couple of times and he rips.

Don’t make me admit that I actually like this song. Don’t do it! I won’t admit it!

Sigh. Fine. I’m just mad because I like this song, too.

TIL that Kenny Wayne Shepherd is married to Mel Gibson’s daughter.
Thanks, Wikipedia.
